Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS)

UAS

A UAS is the full system that operates a drone: the aircraft, the control station, the data link, the payload, and the operator. The market splits into consumer (saturated commodity), commercial (fragmented growth), and military (where funding and talent concentrate). DoD classifies UAS by group size, from Group 1 (under 20 lb, hand-launched) to Group 5 (over 1320 lb, above 18,000 ft, Global Hawk class). UAS engineering attracts both traditional aerospace talent and software-heavy folks from autonomy and robotics. Compensation for senior autonomy engineers at defense-aligned UAS programs has climbed 15 to 25 percent year over year since 2023. Roles where this matters: Engineering, Software Engineering, Operations, Program Management.
